ARALDITE 2021-1

Main features

  • Rapid 9-Minute Strength Development
  • Broad Multi-Material Bonding
  • 27 MPa Aluminum Lap Shear

Product Description

ARALDITE® 2021-1 is a two-component, room-temperature-curing, toughened methacrylate structural adhesive for rapid assembly of selected plastics, composites and metals. The 1:1 mix system forms a thixotropic, pale-yellow adhesive with a typical pot life of approximately 3 minutes at 25°C. It can be dispensed manually or robotically, including from mixer-equipped cartridges. A typical 0.25-0.5 mm adhesive layer is recommended for high lap-shear performance, although some steel joints may require greater thickness. The cured adhesive is suitable for service temperatures up to 100°C. It should not be selected for copper, brass or copper-alloy substrates.

Key features

  • Rapid strength development: Typical lap shear strength exceeds 1 MPa after 9 minutes and 10 MPa after 13 minutes at 23°C.
  • Multi-material bonding: Supports bonding of selected plastics, composites and metals, with substrate-specific testing reported for multiple grades.
  • Toughened cured performance: Typical tensile strength is 42 MPa with elongation above 10%, and service use is supported up to 100°C.

Applications / Suitable for

  • Rapid assembly operations using manual or robotic adhesive application
  • Bonding selected plastics and composites, including GRP, CFRP, SMC, ABS, PVC, PMMA, PC and polyamides
  • Bonding aluminium, mild steel, stainless steel and galvanised steel

Technical selection guidance

Surface preparation and joint design
Degreasing is the minimum recommended preparation. Mechanical abrasion or chemical etching after degreasing supports stronger and more durable joints. Avoid low-grade alcohol, gasoline and paint thinners. Validate bondline thickness and fixation using the actual substrate pair and joint geometry.
Substrate scope and limitations
The product is not suitable for copper, brass or copper-alloy substrates. Under the reported ISO 4587 plastic-joint test conditions, substrate failure was observed for EP-GRP, UP-GRP, ABS, PVC, PMMA and PC. Bond performance remains specific to the substrate grade, surface preparation, cure and joint configuration.
