ARALDITE 2022-1

Main features

  • 1 MPa Lap Shear
  • Thixotropic Gap-Filling Control
  • Multi-Substrate Bonding Capability

Product Description

ARALDITE 2022-1 is a two-component, room-temperature-curing, toughened methacrylate structural adhesive for fast assembly on a wide range of substrates, including materials that can be difficult to bond. Supplied at a 1:1 mix ratio by weight and volume, it forms a pale-yellow, thixotropic adhesive with a typical pot life of approximately 10 minutes at 25°C. The system combines rapid lap-shear strength development with gap-filling capability up to 4 mm and can be used effectively with limited surface preparation, although clean, mechanically abraded or chemically etched surfaces provide the strongest and most durable joints.

Key features

  • Fast strength development: Typical lap shear strength exceeds 1 MPa after 12 minutes and 10 MPa after 17 minutes at 23°C.
  • Controlled 1:1 processing: The mixed adhesive is thixotropic, has a typical 10-minute pot life at 25°C, and is available for cartridge mixing and dispensing.
  • Gap-filling multi-substrate bonding: Supports gaps up to 4 mm and is intended for a wide range of metal, plastic, and composite substrates.

Applications / Suitable for

  • Fast room-temperature assembly operations
  • Bonding evaluated metals, plastics, and fiber-reinforced composites
  • Joints requiring gap filling or tolerance of less-than-ideal pretreatment

Storage and Handling

Store ARALDITE 2022-1 for up to 18 months at 2-8°C in the original sealed containers. The product may be brought to room temperature before use, but total room-temperature exposure should not exceed six months, and long-term exposure above 25°C reduces shelf life. Clean tools with hot water and soap before adhesive residue cures. Consult the current Safety Data Sheet before handling.

Bonding and environmental performance evidence

ARALDITE 2022-1 has been evaluated in substrate-specific and environmental laboratory tests. Results apply to the stated materials, preparation, cure schedule, and test conditions and should not be treated as universal design allowables.

Metal-to-metal lap-shear evaluation
ISO 4587 lap-shear testing covers aluminum L165, steel 37/11, stainless steel V4A, galvanized steel, copper, and brass.
Cured 16 h at 40°C and tested at 23°C after sandblasting and degreasing. Steel and stainless-steel tests used a 0.25 mm adhesive joint.
Plastic and composite lap-shear evaluation
EP-GRP, UP-GRP, CFRP, SMC, ABS, PVC, PMMA, polycarbonate, and polyamide were evaluated. Substrate failure was observed for EP-GRP, UP-GRP, SMC, ABS, PVC, PMMA, and polycarbonate under the stated test conditions.
ISO 4587; cured 16 h at 40°C and tested at 23°C after light abrasion and isopropanol degreasing.
Thermal cycling on aluminum
A typical lap-shear strength of 27 MPa was measured after 100 thermal cycles from -30°C to 70°C.
ISO 4587 on aluminum; sandblasted and degreased; cured 16 h at 40°C. Each 6 h cycle used 2 h at -30°C, a 1 h ramp to 70°C, 2 h at 70°C, and a 1 h ramp to -30°C.
Environmental and temperature test coverage
Additional lap-shear evaluations cover immersion in industrial methylated spirits, lead-free petrol, ethyl acetate, 10% acetic acid, xylene, lubricating oil, paraffin, and water at 23°C, 60°C, and 90°C, together with tropical weathering, heat ageing at 70°C, and testing from -40°C to 100°C.
Test results are specific to the stated exposure media, duration, substrate preparation, cure schedule, and test temperature.
