Main features

  • Aircraft Fairing and Smoothing
  • Controlled Rapid Processing
  • Documented Aluminum Bond Performance

Product Description

LOCTITE EA 960F is a two-part, rapid room-temperature-curing epoxy fairing and smoothing compound for exterior aircraft surfaces. The paste system is color coded: reddish brown Part A and off-white Part B mix to a uniform red, providing a visual indication of complete mixing. A 100:50 Part A-to-Part B mix ratio by weight is paired with a 30-minute pot life for a 100 g mass at 25 degrees C. Handling strength develops in 1 hour at 25 degrees C, and the cured compound may be sanded or painted after 5 hours at that temperature. Typical lap shear strength is 15.2 MPa at 25 degrees C on prepared 2024-T3 bare aluminum after a 24-hour cure.

Additional Information

Aerospace epoxy fairing compound

LOCTITE EA 960F

LOCTITE EA 960F is a two-part epoxy paste developed for fairing and smoothing exterior aircraft surfaces. The fast room-temperature-curing compound combines filler capability with a red color-change mixing indication, 30-minute pot life for a 100 g mass at 25 degrees C, and a cured surface that can be sanded or painted after 5 hours at that temperature.

As-supplied properties

Mix ratio
100:50 by weight
Part A to Part B. A 3:2 volume ratio is also reported, but volume measurement is not recommended for structural applications unless proper ratio control is assured.
Pot life
30 minutes
For a 100 g mixed mass at 25 degrees C, tested by ASTM D2471.

Component identity, temperature, method, ratio basis, and mixed mass are important when interpreting these source-reported values.

Application process

Mixing, application, and cure

Bring both components close to room temperature, combine them at the documented ratio, and mix until the entire material is uniformly red. Apply only to clean, dry, properly prepared surfaces. Heat buildup during and after mixing is normal; do not mix quantities greater than 250 g because uncontrolled decomposition and toxic fumes can occur.

Mixing: Use 100 parts Part A to 50 parts Part B by weight and mix thoroughly to a uniform red. A 3:2 ratio by volume is reported, but volume measurement is not recommended for structural applications unless proper ratio control is assured.
Working and handling: Pot life is 30 minutes for a 100 g mass at 25 degrees C. Handling strength develops in 1 hour at 25 degrees C.
Cure and finishing: Normal performance is reported after 24 hours above 25 degrees C. For small masses, 1 hour at 71 degrees C gives complete cure. The compound may be sanded or painted after 5 hours at 25 degrees C. Alternate schedules reported to achieve 3.4 MPa on aluminum are 60 minutes at 25 degrees C, 15 minutes at 49 degrees C, 4 minutes at 60 degrees C, and 1 minute at 96 degrees C.
Storage and Handling

Warranty life is reported for both components as 1 year when stored below 25 degrees C and 6 months when stored below 32 degrees C; one year is also reported below 4 degrees C. Store Part A between 0 and 25 degrees C and keep containers tightly closed. Store Part B in its original container in a cool, well-ventilated area away from heat, sparks, and open flame. Follow current container labels and safety documentation.

Final properties

Typical lap shear
15.2 MPa at 25 degrees C
ASTM D1002 on FPL-etched 2024-T3 bare aluminum after a 24-hour cure at 25 degrees C.
Service temperature
71 degrees C
Defined by retention of 6.9 MPa using ASTM D1002, not as a general guarantee of unchanged properties.

Mechanical values are typical test results for the documented substrate, preparation, cure, and temperature. They are not universal joint design allowables.

Property Value Unit Method / condition
Cured density 1.37 g/cm3 Cured material.
Typical tensile lap shear strength 2200 / 15.2 psi / MPa ASTM D1002 at 25 degrees C after 24 hours at 25 degrees C; 2024-T3 bare aluminum, FPL etched per ASTM D2651-90.
Service temperature 160 / 71 degrees F / degrees C Defined as the temperature at which the adhesive retains 1000 psi or 6.9 MPa using ASTM D1002.
