Product Description
MOLYKOTE® BG-20 Synthetic Bearing Grease is an NLGI 2–3 polyolester grease thickened with a lithium complex for metal-to-metal bearing contacts operating at high to very high speeds under medium to heavy loads. Its documented service range is -45°C to 180°C, with short periods up to 200°C, and the supplied maximum Dn screening value is 750,000. Typical laboratory data include a 2,400 N four-ball weld load, a 1.0 mm wear scar under 800 N, and an average 662-hour FE9 rolling-bearing result at the stated test condition. It can be applied by brush, spatula, grease gun, automatic device, or central lubrication system.
Key features
- High-speed bearing capability: Maximum Dn screening value of 750,000; actual suitability varies with temperature, load, and bearing type.

Additional Information
MOLYKOTE® BG-20 Synthetic Bearing Grease
An NLGI 2–3 polyolester grease with a lithium-complex thickener, anti-wear/extreme-pressure additives, and an oxidation inhibitor. It is intended for metal-to-metal bearings operating at high to very high speeds under medium to heavy loads, including elevated-temperature service.
MOLYKOTE® BG-20 is a polyolester-based synthetic grease for high-speed bearing lubrication.
As-supplied grease properties
| Property | Value | Unit | Method / condition |
|---|---|---|---|
| Product form | Synthetic bearing grease | — | Polyolester base oil; lithium-complex thickener |
| Consistency class | 2–3 | NLGI | Product description |
| Unworked penetration | 240–270 | mm/10 | ISO 2137 |
| Base-oil viscosity | 55 | mm²/s | DIN 51562 at 40°C |
| Density | 1.01 | g/mL | ISO 2811 at 20°C |
| Drop point | >295 | °C | ISO 2176; not an operating-temperature limit |
Typical values are not specification limits. NLGI grade, penetration, base-oil viscosity, and drop point describe different characteristics and should not be treated as interchangeable.
Bearing performance and operating limits
| Property / test | Result | Unit | Method / condition |
|---|---|---|---|
| Service temperature | -45 to 180; up to 200 short term | °C | Supplier-listed operating range |
| Initial breakaway torque at -20°C | 96 × 10-3 | N·m | ASTM D1478-07 |
| Running torque after 60 min at -20°C | 21 × 10-3 | N·m | ASTM D1478-07 |
| Initial breakaway torque at -50°C | 1,004 × 10-3 | N·m | ASTM D1478-07 |
| Running torque after 60 min at -50°C | 313 × 10-3 | N·m | ASTM D1478-07 |
| Four-ball weld load | 2,400 | N | DIN 51350 part 4 |
| Wear scar under 800 N | 1.0 | mm | DIN 51350 part 5 |
| Almen-Wieland OK load | 20,000 | N | Frictional force at OK load: 2,250 N |
| FE9 rolling-element-bearing result | 662 average | h | DIN 51821-02A; supplier notation 1,500/6,000/160°C |
| Maximum Dn value | 750,000 | mm/min | Calculated approximation; varies with temperature, load, and bearing type |
| Corrosion rating | 1–2 | degree | DIN 51802 SKF-Emcor method |
| Oil separation | 1.2 | % | DIN 51817 standard test |
These are typical, condition-specific laboratory results. Bench weld-load and wear values are not equipment load ratings, the FE9 result is limited to its stated test condition, and the Dn value does not establish universal bearing speed capability or a relubrication interval.
Prepare and apply the grease to the bearing system
Use the documented application methods with a clean lubrication point and evaluate the product against the actual bearing type, load, speed, and operating temperature.
Store at or below 20°C in the original unopened container. Usable life is 60 months from the date of production. Review current product safety information and the container label before handling.
High-speed bearing applications
The documented application set centers on metal-to-metal bearings exposed to high speed, medium to heavy loading, and elevated temperature. Product selection should retain the actual bearing geometry, temperature, speed, load, and lubrication-system conditions.
