Product Description

Plexus® MA1130 is a two-part methacrylate structural adhesive for bonding composites and primed metals, with additional use on thermoplastic, metal, and composite assemblies. The 10:1 by-volume system provides a typical 26–33 minute working time at 75°F (23.9°C), 0.03–0.5 in (0.75–12.4 mm) gap tolerance, and a gray cured color. It can be dispensed from ready-to-use cartridges or bulk pails and drums. Limited surface preparation may be sufficient on supported substrates, while PC120 Cleaner Conditioner is recommended on metal.

Bonding process

Processing and application

MA1130 can be dispensed from handheld cartridges or automatic meter/mix/dispense equipment. Bonding performance depends on maintaining the specified component ratio, controlling adhesive temperature, preparing contaminated surfaces appropriately, and mating the parts within the working time.

Mix ratio: 10:1 by volume or 10.4:1.0 by weight, Part A to Part B.
Recommended application temperature: 65–85°F (18–30°C). Temperatures outside this range can significantly change the cure rate.
Typical work time: 26–33 minutes at 75°F (23.9°C). Adhesive and activator temperature should be held reasonably constant for consistent dispensing.

Recommended bonding sequence

Stage 1
Prepare the bonding surfaces
Keep surfaces free of grease, dirt, and other contaminants. Plastics, coated metals, and raw metals may require only a dry rag or light solvent depending on surface condition. Dust-free composites may be bonded as-is or lightly abraded to remove mold release or increase surface area. PC120 Cleaner Conditioner is recommended on metal.
Stage 2
Mix and dispense
Load the cartridge and remove the end caps, attach the mixing tip, and dispense a mixer’s length before applying adhesive. Apply enough material to completely fill the joint when parts are mated. Handheld cartridges and automatic meter/mix/dispense equipment are supported.
Stage 3
Mate, fixture, and build strength
Mate parts within the working time and fix them in position until sufficient bond strength is achieved. Typical profiles at 60°F / 75°F / 90°F are: work time 30–40 / 26–33 / 15–20 min; time to 50 psi 45–50 / 35–40 / 25–35 min; time to 500 psi 65–75 / 60–70 / 35–40 min; and time to 1,000 psi >100 / 100–110 / 45–50 min. A post-bake is required for ultimate performance on thin-gauge metals. Contact Krayden for the applicable post-bake schedule.
Storage and Handling

Shelf life is 6 months based on continuous storage between 55°F and 77°F (13°C and 25°C). Intermittent or prolonged exposure above 80°F (27°C) reduces shelf life, and exposure above 100°F (38°C) should be avoided. Cool storage between 45°F and 65°F (7°C and 18°C) may extend shelf life; return cold-stored material to room temperature before use. Mixing large masses can generate substantial exothermic heat, so dispense only the quantity that can be used within the working time and keep gap thickness within the product’s maximum gap-fill capability.

Technical guidance

Bulk dispensing hardware
For pail or drum dispensing, bulk equipment must be explosion proof. Parts in direct contact with the liquid adhesive and activator should be stainless steel. Avoid brass, carbon steel, copper, and copper-containing alloys. Teflon, Teflon-coated PVC foam, ethylene/propylene, or polyethylene are recommended for seals and gaskets; avoid Viton, BUNA-N, Neoprene, and other elastomers.
Clean-up and chemical exposure
Clean-up is easiest before cure using common laboratory solvents, citrus terpene or NMP-containing cleaners, degreasers, or soap and water. Cured adhesive may require careful scraping followed by a cleaning agent. Chemical resistance is described as excellent to hydrocarbons, acids and bases from pH 3–10, and salt solutions, while strong polar solvents and strong acids or bases are identified as susceptibility areas. Actual resistance depends on contact mode, frequency, duration, and temperature.
