Main features
- Low-Density Honeycomb-Core Syntactic Reinforcement
- Thixotropic Application Control
- 30-Minute Working Window
Product Description
LORD® 4688 A/B Modified Epoxy Syntactic Foam is a two-component, low-density epoxy paste used to reinforce honeycomb core and other hollow structures. The smooth, creamy, thixotropic mixed material is suited to trowel or injection application. Pink Part A and blue Part B are combined at 100 parts A to 11 parts B to produce a brown mixture with a typical 30-minute working time at 24°C and approximately one-hour set time. The system cures in 24 hours at 24°C or 3 hours at 75°C. A typical specific gravity of 0.45 supports lightweight structural fill and reinforcement applications.

Additional Information
LORD® 4688 A/B Modified Epoxy Syntactic Foam
A lightweight modified epoxy syntactic foam system used to reinforce honeycomb core and other hollow structures. The mixed material has a smooth, creamy and thixotropic consistency suited to controlled trowel or injection placement.
Color-coded components for controlled mixing
| Property | Part A | Part B | Mixed system |
|---|---|---|---|
| Form | Paste | Liquid component | Paste |
| Color | Pink | Blue | Brown |
| Viscosity / rheology | Thixotropic paste | 50 cP | Thixotropic |
| Mix ratio | 100 parts Part A to 11 parts Part B; the source does not specify whether this basis is by weight or volume. | ||
| Flash point | Greater than 125°C | ||
| Specific gravity | 0.45 g/cm³ as reported; equivalent density statement in the source is 28.4 lb/ft³ | ||
Mix the color-coded components and place by trowel or injection
- Condition both components to the intended processing environment before mixing.
- Combine 100 parts Part A with 11 parts Part B using the validated ratio basis.
- Mix until the pink and blue components form a uniform brown material.
- Use trowel application for accessible cavities and injection where the assembly geometry supports controlled filling.
- Complete placement within the typical 30-minute working time at 24°C.
- Allow approximately one hour for set under the source conditions.
- Cure for 24 hours at 24°C or 3 hours at 75°C.
- Validate fill quality, voiding, exotherm, section thickness and cure temperature in the actual hollow structure.
Storage and handling
Shelf life is six months when stored in the original unopened containers in a clean, dry warehouse environment. The uploaded source does not provide a controlled storage-temperature range. Use only with adequate ventilation and suitable gloves and protective clothing. Obtain and follow current regional safety data for both components before production use.
Low-density cured reinforcement with source-reported mechanical and outgassing data
The source identifies all values as indicative rather than design requirements. Mechanical units are not shown in the source and therefore are not assigned on this page.
| Property | Condition | Source-reported value | Interpretation boundary |
|---|---|---|---|
| Compression | Room temperature | 3,500 | Units and method are not identified in the source. |
| Compression | -320°F | 8,000 | Units and method are not identified in the source. |
| Tensile shear | Room temperature | 2,000 | Substrate, specimen, units and method are not identified. |
| Tensile shear | -320°F | 1,500 | Substrate, specimen, units and method are not identified. |
| Total mass loss | ASTM E595 | 0.52% | Typical outgassing result; assembly suitability still requires validation. |
| Collected volatile condensable material | ASTM E595 | 0.01% | Typical outgassing result; not a qualification by itself. |
The material is positioned for reinforcing honeycomb core and other hollow structures. Final evaluation should address cavity geometry, injection path, fill completeness, trapped air, mass, cure exotherm, thermal expansion, low-temperature loading, substrate compatibility and the required structural margin.
